Getting Married in Santorini From Australia

How Australian couples marry on the caldera — the documents, the long-distance planning and the real prices.

The short answer

Australian citizens can legally marry in Santorini with two documents each — a letter of no impediment and a full birth certificate, apostilled and translated into Greek — plus passport copies. Most couples plan everything remotely with us by email and video call. Packages start at €950.

The paperwork

The Documents You Will Need

For United Kingdom & Australian citizens

  • Single status letter or letter of no impediment (one for each of you) with an apostille stamp, translated into Greek. “Single status” is a document issued by your local registrar confirming that you are free to marry.
  • Full birth certificates with an apostille stamp, translated into Greek
  • Divorce certificate, if you have been married previously
  • Photocopies of your passports

Full details, including apostilles and translations, are on the legal documents page. The single-status letter must be issued no more than 3 months before the wedding date.

Planning From the Other Side of the World

Most of our Australian couples plan the whole wedding by email and video call — we set up a call, walk through the options, and you decide everything from home. We are the eyes and hands on the island: we check the venues, hold the date with the registrar, and send you photos and menus rather than brochures.

The paperwork works exactly as it does for UK couples — apostilles and certified Greek translations on your single-status letters and birth certificates, with the letters issued within three months of the date. We need everything by email two months out, which fits neatly around booking flights for the Greek summer.

Questions We Hear Most

Is a Santorini marriage legally recognised in Australia?

Yes. Civil marriages conducted in Santorini are internationally recognised as legally binding, and after the wedding the marriage officer sends a certified copy of the marriage certificate to your home country's embassy.

What documents do Australian couples need?

The same list as UK couples: a single-status letter (letter of no impediment) and a full birth certificate for each of you, both with apostille stamps and certified Greek translations, plus passport copies — and a divorce certificate if either of you was married before.

When should we book, given the distance?

Book the date as early as you can — June and September sunset slots go a year or more ahead — and plan to be on the island at least two days before the wedding, plus one working day after it for the final signature.

Is a symbolic ceremony easier from Australia?

Much easier: no apostilles, no translations, no document costs. Handle the legal part at home, then hold the real celebration here — identical in every visible way.
