Most of them whitewashed and blue-domed against the caldera. It is no wonder people come here from all over the world to marry in one.

Greek Orthodox Weddings Santorini

A Greek Orthodox wedding in Santorini is a culturally rich experience, set against the island's landscapes and its iconic blue-domed churches. Orthodox weddings are known for their religious significance, their traditional customs, and celebrations that often run for hours.

According to the Greek Orthodox Church, the marriage must be conducted in an Orthodox church. In an interfaith marriage, the non-Orthodox partner must have been baptised in water in the name of the Holy Trinity. A marriage cannot take place in the Orthodox Church between an Orthodox Christian and a non-Christian — the non-Orthodox partner must belong to a Christian denomination acceptable to the Orthodox Church.

The bride typically wears a white or ivory gown and the groom a formal suit; guests are usually expected in formal attire.

The ceremony

Venue selection

Many couples choose the iconic settings — blue-domed churches, cliffside chapels, or open terraces overlooking the caldera. One of the best is Anastasis church in Imerovigli, with Father Leonidas. He was born in Chicago, and he conducts the ceremony in both Greek and English.

Blessing of the rings

The couple's wedding rings are blessed by the priest before the ceremony begins.

Crowning (Stefana)

The priest places crowns — stefana — on the couple's heads, signifying their status as king and queen of their new family.

Sacrament of Matrimony

A deeply religious ceremony conducted by an Orthodox priest, including readings from the Bible, prayers, and the exchange of vows and rings.

Circling the altar

The couple traditionally walks around the altar three times, representing the Holy Trinity and their journey into married life.

Photography and film

Given the landscapes here, photography and videography are essential — and the churches themselves are among the most photographed buildings in Greece.
