Getting Married in Santorini From the UK

The paperwork, the process and the real prices for British couples — from the planners who file the documents.

The short answer

UK citizens can legally marry in Santorini with two documents each: a single-status letter and a full birth certificate, both carrying an apostille stamp and certified Greek translations, plus passport copies. The single-status letter must be issued within 3 months of the wedding. Packages start at €950; we handle the licence and the Town Hall.

The Documents You Will Need

For United Kingdom & Australian citizens

  • Single status letter or letter of no impediment (one for each of you) with an apostille stamp, translated into Greek. “Single status” is a document issued by your local registrar confirming that you are free to marry.
  • Full birth certificates with an apostille stamp, translated into Greek
  • Divorce certificate, if you have been married previously
  • Photocopies of your passports

Full details, including apostilles and translations, are on the legal documents page. The single-status letter must be issued no more than 3 months before the wedding date.

Why British Couples Marry Here

Santorini is a short-haul flight from the UK — with direct flights in season — and it is common here to marry outdoors, on a caldera terrace or in a chapel courtyard, without depleting your savings in the process. Couples of mixed religion often choose Santorini when a single ceremony at home is complicated.

The practical part: your single-status letters and full birth certificates need apostille stamps and certified Greek translations, and the letters must be issued within three months of the date. Gathering apostilles and authorised translations typically costs €500 to €1,000. We handle the Santorini side — the licence, the Town Hall, the registrar and, if you need them, the witnesses.

Questions We Hear Most

Is a Santorini marriage legally recognised in the UK?

Yes. Civil marriages conducted in Santorini are internationally recognised as legally binding, and after the wedding the marriage officer sends a certified copy of the marriage certificate to your home country's embassy.

How long do we need to be in Santorini?

Plan to be on the island at least two days before the wedding for the pre-wedding meeting, and one working day after it for the final signature at the Town Hall.

Can we do the legal part at home and celebrate here?

Many couples do exactly that: a quiet register-office marriage at home, then a symbolic ceremony in Santorini that looks and feels identical — with no apostilles, no translations and no document costs.

What does a Santorini wedding cost compared to a UK wedding?

Our packages are published in euros: civil weddings run €950–€3,870, elopements from €2,250, and all-inclusive weddings with guests €7,400–€9,500. We confirm every total in writing before you book.
